DeLand, FL, July 7, 2025 — Foundations to Healing is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Stephen C. Viel as the organization’s new Medical Director. A dedicated and experienced emergency physician, Dr. Viel brings over a decade of frontline medical experience and a deep commitment to addressing the opioid crisis and advancing addiction recovery.
Born and raised in Central Florida, Dr. Viel earned his medical degree from Florida State University College of Medicine before completing his residency in Emergency Medicine at the prestigious Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. His passion for community health and recovery was evident during his five-year tenure as Medical Director of Emergency Services at Halifax Health, where he led efforts through both the COVID-19 pandemic and the escalating opioid epidemic.
While at Halifax Health, Dr. Viel implemented an innovative overdose intervention program that integrated peer specialists into the emergency care process, providing a vital bridge between crisis intervention and long-term recovery support.
