Self Care for the Holidays in Recovery

We hope this writing finds you cozy, safe, and taking a moment for yourself as we step into the heart of the holiday season. December can be full of lights, music, and special moments — but it can also be a challenging time for anyone to navigate recovery. This month, we want to offer some gentle reminders, encouragement, and simple tools to help you stay grounded and supported.

The Holidays Aren’t Easy for Everyone

While the holidays are often shown as cheerful and perfect, real life looks different. For many people, this time of year brings:

  • More stress and busier schedules
  • Family tension or uncomfortable gatherings
  • Loneliness or memories of loss
  • Events where alcohol or substances are present
  • Disrupted routines and less personal time

If any of these feel familiar, please know you’re not alone. These experiences can increase cravings or emotional difficulties for people living with substance use disorder — and that’s completely normal. It doesn’t mean you’re slipping. It means you’re human, and the holidays can be hard.

Simple Ways to Take Care of Yourself This Season

This time of year, can feel overwhelming, so here are a few gentle, realistic ways to stay steady:

• Set small boundaries. Give yourself permission to leave events early, skip gatherings that feel draining, or say “no” without guilt.

• Stay connected. A quick text or check-in with a friend, peer, or counselor can make a big difference.

• Keep a little routine. Try to hold onto one or two daily habits — like morning coffee, journaling, a walk, or attending your regular groups.

• Plan ahead Think through events where substances may be present and decide how you want to handle them before you go.

• Give yourself grace. This season doesn’t require perfection. Progress is more than enough.
